Streets
This year, the focus of our programme is ‘Streets’. Streets – what do they mean to us? What do they mean to a city? Is a street a place of transition, a place of dwelling, or more?
The theatre team posed these questions in a session and everyone felt the need for reflection and exploration. What better way to take this further than to walk the streets – different kinds of streets – in different locations.
We started with the streets of our everyday life, in front of and behind our school. This was a novel experience because it meant getting immersed in life outside school during school hours.
Soon we stretched beyond our immediate surroundings and visited the streets of Shivaji Nagar, Commercial Street and Gandhi Bazaar. Each child had a zine to record images they had observed, along with the varied sounds, words and smells.
The question emerged – how did our walks change based on the kind of street and its location? In the process we realised that Street Theatre and Street Art as forms of expression could not be ignored. This led to stimulating classroom discussions. The strong impressions emanating from our experiences, our learning within and beyond our school, provided rich opportunities to discuss, ideate, improvise, be challenged and hopefully, create!
